FLAT FOOT RECONSTRUCTION

If you need a flat foot reconstruction, please Schedule an appointment with one of our orthopedic specialists as soon as possible.

What Is Flat Foot Reconstruction?

Surgeons perform flat foot reconstruction, also called flatfoot corrective surgery, to address structural issues and restore the arch in the foot of individuals with flatfoot deformity. Flatfoot, or pes planus, occurs when the foot’s arch collapses, causing the entire sole to touch the ground while standing or walking.

When conservative treatments like orthotics, physical therapy, and activity modification fail to alleviate symptoms and functional limitations, flat foot reconstruction becomes a consideration. The surgical procedure aims to realign the bones, tendons, and ligaments in the foot to restore proper arch support and enhance foot function.

General Flat Foot Procedure Steps

The surgeon initiates the procedure by making one or more incisions in the foot to access the affected structures. They then address tendon and ligament issues by either lengthening or repairing damaged ones to provide better support and alignment. Sometimes, tendon transfers become necessary to reinforce the arch. Additionally, the surgeon performs bone realignment through osteotomies, where they cut and reposition bones to restore the arch’s height and correct misalignments. In severe cases, the surgeon may need to perform joint fusion to stabilize and realign specific foot joints. Implants or screws are sometimes utilized to hold bones in the corrected position during healing. Finally, after completing all necessary corrections, the surgeon closes the incisions with sutures and securely bandages the foot.

Flat Foot Procedure Recovery

After flat foot reconstruction, patients typically undergo a period of immobilization using a cast or specialized boot. Under the guidance of a physical therapist, they gradually transition to weight-bearing activities. Post-operative rehabilitation plays a crucial role in restoring strength, flexibility, and function in the foot.

Like any surgical procedure, flat foot reconstruction carries risks such as infection, blood clots, and potential complications related to bone healing. Before deciding on flat foot reconstruction, patients should undergo a thorough evaluation and discussion with an orthopedic surgeon. The surgeon will assess the patient’s specific condition, medical history, and overall health to determine the most suitable treatment plan.
