What Is A Foot Exostectomy?

Surgeons perform a foot exostectomy, also referred to as exostosis removal, to eliminate a bony prominence or growth known as an exostosis from the foot. Exostoses are benign bony outgrowths that may appear on bone surfaces, typically at joints or points where tendons and ligaments attach. These growths can result in pain, discomfort, and restricted mobility, particularly when they exert pressure on nearby structures such as nerves or soft tissues.

Foot Exostectomy Causes

Bunions develop as exostoses at the base of the big toe, causing it to angle toward the second toe. Haglund’s deformity results from an exostosis at the back of the heel bone, leading to pain and inflammation where the Achilles tendon attaches. Hallux rigidus occurs due to an exostosis on the top of the big toe joint, resulting in stiffness and limited range of motion in the joint. Tailor’s bunion, or bunionette, forms as an exostosis at the base of the little toe.

Foot Exostectomy Procedure

During the foot exostectomy procedure, the surgeon makes an incision over the affected area to access the exostosis. The surgeon carefully removes the bony growth and may make any necessary adjustments to the surrounding tissues, tendons, or ligaments to ensure proper alignment and function.

Following the surgery, the surgeon closes the incision with sutures, and typically places the foot in a bandage or cast to protect the surgical site during the initial healing phase. Post-operative rehabilitation may include physical therapy and exercises aimed at restoring foot function and mobility.

Foot exostectomy is generally considered a safe procedure with a relatively short recovery period. As with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications, including infection, nerve damage, and delayed wound healing. However, complications are relatively rare.
