FOREARM FRACTURES

If you suffer from severe pain caused by a forearm fracture, please Schedule an appointment with one of our orthopedic specialists as soon as possible.

The forearm consists of two bones, one on either side of the arm. These bones, the radius and the ulna, run all the way down to the wrist. Moreover, theradius and the ulna make up the forearm. However, for adults, most forearm fractures mean both the radius and ulna break. Additionally, forearm fractures can occur near the wrist, in the middle of the forearm, or near the elbow.

What are the different types of forearm fractures?

Forearm fractures can occur as a single (radius or ulna only) or combined fracture. A Galeazzi fracture typically results from a displacement of the radius coupled with a dislocation of the ulna at the wrist, occurring at the juncture where the radius and ulna meet. Conversely, a Monteggia fracture commonly involves a fracture in the ulna, accompanied by the dislocation of the head of the radius at the elbow joint.

How do Orthopedic Specialists Treat a Forearm Fracture?

Nonoperative options

Orthopedists sometimes treat small, simple fractures in the forearm by casting the arm for 4-6 weeks. Additionally, the physician will monitor progress through appointments and X-rays to ensure proper bone healing. After the cast is removed, patients typically undergo physical therapy to regain strength and motion.

Surgical Treatments

Most forearm fractures usually necessitate surgery. Typically, the surgeon will create one or two incisions at different levels and sides of the forearm. Once the fractures are aligned, they are stabilized with plates and screws. Additionally, post-surgery, your forearm will be placed in a short splint for comfort and protection. You will be instructed to refrain from lifting weight for approximately 6 weeks.
