KIDNER PROCEDURE

If you need a The Kidner procedure, please Schedule an appointment with one of our orthopedic specialists as soon as possible.

What Is A Kidner Procedure?

The Kidner procedure treats specific foot conditions, particularly accessory navicular syndrome, through surgery. This syndrome involves an additional bone piece situated on the inner side of the foot, near the navicular bone. For some people, this accessory navicular triggers pain, inflammation, and discomfort by irritating nearby tendons and tissues.

The Kidner procedure entails surgically removing the accessory navicular bone to alleviate symptoms and enhance foot function. Surgeons typically perform this operation when conservative treatments, like rest, orthotics, and physical therapy, fail to deliver adequate relief.

Kidner Procedure Steps

During the Kidner procedure, patients typically undergo local or regional anesthesia to numb the foot for surgery. Following anesthesia administration, the surgeon makes a small incision over the area of the accessory navicular bone. With precision, the surgeon then identifies and removes the accessory navicular bone from its connections to surrounding structures. Depending on the case, the surgeon may also make adjustments to nearby tendons or ligaments that contribute to discomfort or irritation. Once the bone removal and any necessary soft tissue adjustments are completed, the incision is meticulously closed with sutures. Finally, the surgical site is dressed and bandaged to promote healing and protect against infection.

Procedure Rehabilitation

After the procedure, the patient may need to use crutches or a walker to avoid putting weight on the foot during the initial healing phase. The surgeon will provide instructions for post-operative care, including wound care, pain management, and physical therapy exercises to aid in the recovery process.

The Kidner procedure is considered a safe and effective treatment for accessory navicular syndrome. It typically results in relief from pain and improved foot function. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, such as infection, nerve injury, and delayed wound healing. The decision to undergo the Kidner procedure is made after a thorough evaluation and discussion with an orthopedic surgeon, who will assess the individual’s specific condition, medical history, and overall health to determine if the procedure is the appropriate treatment option.
