LAPIDUS ARTHRODESIS FOR BUNIONS

If you need a Lapidus Arthrodesis for Bunions, please Schedule an appointment with one of our orthopedic specialists as soon as possible.

What Is A Lapidus Arthrodesis for Bunions?

Lapidus arthrodesis, a surgical procedure for correcting severe or recurrent bunions (hallux valgus deformity) unresponsive to conservative treatments, involves fusing the first metatarsal bone with the medial cuneiform bone. This fusion immobilizes and stabilizes the joint, correcting the deformity and realigning the big toe. The goal of the surgery is to alleviate pain, improve foot function, and prevent the bunion from recurring.

Lapidus Arthrodesis Procedure

Before the surgery, medical staff typically administer either general anesthesia (to induce sleep) or regional anesthesia (to numb the lower body) to the patient. The surgeon then makes an incision over the MTP joint to access the bones. Next, the surgeon removes the cartilage from the joint surfaces of the first metatarsal and the medial cuneiform bones. Subsequently, the surgeon aligns the bones properly and uses screws or other fixation devices to secure them together, promoting bone fusion. Once the fusion is complete, the surgeon closes the incision with sutures and dresses and bandages the surgical site.

After the surgery, the patient will require crutches or a walker for a period of non-weight-bearing on the foot to facilitate proper bone healing. Additionally, a cast or specialized boot may be employed to safeguard the foot during the initial healing phase. Physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises are vital for regaining strength and mobility in the foot throughout the recovery period.

Lapidus arthrodesis represents a significant procedure typically reserved for severe bunions or instances where other bunion correction techniques prove ineffective. As with any surgical procedure, potential risks and complications exist, including infection, delayed bone healing, and non-union (failure of bones to fuse). The decision to undergo Lapidus arthrodesis follows a thorough evaluation and discussion with an orthopedic surgeon. The surgeon evaluates the individual’s condition, medical history, and overall health to ascertain if the procedure serves as the appropriate treatment option.
