Lateral Release and Medial Imbrication

If you need a lateral release and medial imbrication, please Schedule an appointment with one of our orthopedic specialists as soon as possible.

What Is A Lateral Release and Medial Imbrication?

Surgeons perform lateral release and medial imbrication as surgical procedures on the knee to tackle problems associated with patellar instability or maltracking. Some kneecap issues, such as Chondromalacia Patella and Patellar Malalignment benefit from this procedure.

Lateral Release

Surgeons perform lateral release, also known as lateral retinacular release, as a surgical procedure that involves cutting or releasing the tight structures on the outer side (lateral side) of the patella (kneecap). The goal involves loosening the lateral retinaculum, the tissue situated on the outer edge of the patella, and relieving any abnormal pressure or tension that could cause improper patellar tracking.

By releasing the tight lateral structures, lateral release aims to realign the patella and improve its movement within the knee joint. Surgeons usually perform this procedure arthroscopically, utilizing small incisions and specialized instruments.

Medial Imbrication

Surgeons reinforce the medial (inner) aspect of the patella through a surgical method known as medial imbrication, also referred to as medial reefing or medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) imbrication. It entails tightening or repairing the medial patellofemoral ligament. Additionally, this serves as a crucial stabilizing structure on the inner part of the knee responsible for maintaining the patella’s position.

Throughout the procedure, surgeons tighten or reconstruct the ligament to enhance its functionality and offer stability to the patella, thwarting potential dislocations or partial dislocations in the future. Moreover, medial imbrication commonly serves as a treatment for patellar instability or recurrent patellar dislocations.

Furthermore, both lateral release and medial imbrication represent surgical interventions tailored to address distinct issues concerning the patella and its alignment within the knee joint. The determination to undertake either procedure or a combination thereof hinges on the individual’s unique condition, the root causes of patellar instability, and the surgeon’s evaluation.

Orthopedic surgeons specializing in knee surgery typically perform these procedures. They evaluate the patient’s symptoms, conduct a comprehensive examination, and may propose imaging tests to determine the most suitable surgical approach for the individual case. Moreover, pre- and post-operative rehabilitation and physical therapy may prove essential to optimize outcomes and facilitate a successful recovery.
