Patellofemoral Replacement

If you need a Patellofemoral Replacement, please Schedule an appointment with one of our orthopedic specialists as soon as possible.

What Is A Patellofemoral Replacement?

Surgeons perform a patellofemoral replacement, also referred to as a patellofemoral joint replacement or patellofemoral arthroplasty, to replace the patellofemoral joint within the knee. This joint exists between the kneecap (patella) and the groove at the end of the thigh bone (femur).

Healthcare providers typically recommend the procedure for individuals experiencing isolated patellofemoral arthritis, characterized by degeneration or damage specifically within the patellofemoral joint. However the procedure can also benefit people suffering from other knee issues, such as Chondromalacia Patella. Patellofemoral arthritis can cause pain, stiffness, and difficulty with knee movements, particularly during activities that involve bending and straightening the knee.

During a patellofemoral replacement, the surgeon removes the damaged portions of the patella and femur and replaces them with artificial components made of metal and/or plastic. The newly designed components aim to recreate a smooth joint surface and enhance the alignment and function of the patellofemoral joint.

Procedure

When conservative treatments fail to provide sufficient relief for patellofemoral arthritis, medical professionals typically consider patellofemoral replacement. This procedure is generally reserved for individuals with primarily isolated patellofemoral joint involvement, as it does not address arthritis in other compartments of the knee. Surgeons administer either general anesthesia or regional anesthesia during the surgery. They make an incision in the front of the knee and remove the damaged portions of the patella and femur. The artificial components then securely attach to the remaining bone using cement or specialized fixation methods. The procedure can involve a partial replacement, which replaces only the patella or a portion of the femur, or a total replacement, which replaces both components.

Patellofemoral Replacement Rehabilitation

After patellofemoral replacement, a comprehensive rehabilitation program is essential to optimize outcomes and promote recovery. Physical therapy typically begins shortly after surgery to enhance knee joint range of motion, strength, and stability. The specific rehabilitation plan may vary depending on the individual’s condition and the surgeon’s recommendations.

Patellofemoral replacement aims to alleviate pain, enhance knee function, and restore mobility. It may enable individuals to participate in activities with reduced discomfort and increased range of motion. However, similar to other joint replacement surgeries, the longevity and success of the implant can vary, with factors such as activity level, body weight, and overall joint health influencing outcomes.

It’s important to emphasize that patellofemoral replacement is a specialized procedure requiring expertise in knee joint replacements. If you are considering patellofemoral replacement, consulting with a qualified surgeon is crucial. They can assess your condition, discuss the procedure’s benefits and risks, and offer personalized recommendations based on your individual circumstances.
