FORAMINOTOMY

Foraminotomy, considered a surgical procedure used to relieve pressure on the nerves that exit the spinal column through small openings called foramina. The treatment for foraminotomy depends on the underlying cause of the nerve compression. Conservative measures such as rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications may prove recommended for those with mild symptoms. However, if the compression proves severe or progressive, surgery may prove necessary to relieve the pressure on the nerves.

The goal of foraminotomy aims to create more space in the foramina to allow the nerves to exit the spinal column without compression. The procedure involves removing a small portion of the bone or tissue pressing on the nerves. In some cases, a spinal fusion may be performed in conjunction with foraminotomy to stabilize the spine and prevent further nerve compression. Consulting with your doctor to determine the best course of treatment for your specific condition and discussing the potential risks and benefits of foraminotomy holds importance. With proper treatment, many individuals with nerve compression can improve their symptoms and regain their normal function and quality of life.
