EXTENSOR TENDON REPAIR

If you need an extensor tendon repair, please Schedule an appointment with one of our orthopedic specialists as soon as possible.

What Is An Extensor Tendon Repair?

Surgeons perform extensor tendon repair to mend a damaged or severed extensor tendon in the hand or fingers.

This differs from a Tendon Transfer as it does not move a tendon or muscle from another area of the body to repair the damaged area. The extensor tendons straighten (extend) the fingers and thumb. This enables us to open the hand and engage in various activities. Trauma, lacerations, or overuse injuries can cause these tendons to injure.

Indications:

Extensor tendon repair becomes necessary when an extensor tendon suffers partial or complete tearing or cutting. This results in the affected finger or thumb’s inability to fully extend. Moreover, patients with significant impairment in hand function due to the extensor tendon injury are considered for the procedure.

Procedure:

Surgeons typically perform the surgery under local or regional anesthesia, with or without sedation, based on the patient’s condition and preferences. Next, they make an incision over the injured tendon during the procedure to expose the damaged area. Moreover, they carefully identify and reconnect the ends of the torn or cut tendon using sutures or surgical techniques to restore its continuity. In certain cases, they may utilize additional tissue grafts to reinforce the repair, particularly for larger or more complex injuries. Following the repair, they close the wound with stitches and apply a splint or protective dressing to maintain the repaired tendon in a protected position during the initial healing phase.

Recovery and Rehabilitation:

The success of tendon repair hinges on the postoperative recovery period. Proper healing necessitates immobilizing the repaired tendon for several weeks. During recovery, patients actively participate in physical therapy and hand rehabilitation, guided by a therapist who helps them gradually improve the range of motion and strength of the repaired tendon. Full recovery and the return to normal activities may span several months, with the outcome ultimately influenced by the severity of the injury and the patient’s commitment to rehabilitation.

Outcomes

Various factors, such as the severity of the injury, the timeliness of surgery, and the patient’s compliance with postoperative care and rehabilitation, determine the success of extensor tendon repair. Many patients can achieve satisfactory functional outcomes and regain full extension of the affected finger or thumb with appropriate surgical technique and diligent rehabilitation.

Individuals with suspected extensor tendon injuries must promptly seek medical attention. Immediate diagnosis and timely surgical intervention, if necessary, can enhance the likelihood of successful extensor tendon repair and facilitate the restoration of hand function.
